Choice-functional Series of Indefinites and Hamblin Semantics

چکیده
Haspelmath 1997 poses a challenge for current theories of indefinites. Extensive data from 40 languages show there are too many differences between indefinite pronoun series to account for with the usual machinery for indefinites. For instance, we can take Russian as an example: below are 4 main Russian indefinite pronoun series. There are at least 4 other series unlisted in (1), and Bylinina & Testelets 2004 show there are even more indefinite series that are grammaticalizing now.

Choice Functions and the Scopal Semantics of Indefinites
The exceptional scopal behaviour of indefinite NP’s is a long-standing challenge for syntactic and semantic theories. Plural indefinites trigger also distributivity effects that introduce further complications in the problem of scope. Taking these interactions into account, the present paper proposes a revision in standard approaches to the syntax and semantics of indefinites. Following Reinhar...
متن کاملWhat Makes Choice Natural?
The idea to use choice functions in the semantic analysis of indefinites has recently gained increasing attention among linguists and logicians. A central linguistic motivation for the revived interest in this logical perspective, which can be traced back to the epsilon calculus of Hilbert & Bernays (1939), is the observation by Reinhart (1992, 1997) that choice functions can account for the pr...
متن کاملScopal Independence: A Note on Branching and Wide Scope Readings of Indefinites and Disjunctions
Hintikka claimed in the 1970s that indefinites and disjunctions give rise to 'branching readings' that can only be handled by a 'game-theoretic' semantics as expressive as a logic with (a limited form of) quantification over Skolem functions. Due to empirical and methodological difficulties, the issue was left unresolved in the linguistic literature. Independently, however, it was discovered in...
متن کاملTopicality and (Non‐)Specificity in Mandarin
Current analyses of specificity are unable to provide an explanatory account for why specific and nonspecific uses of indefinites are available. While Abusch (1994), Reinhart (1997), and Kratzer (1998) provide successful mechanisms for deriving specific readings, they do not provide a fundamental explanation for the availability of this mechanism. This is due to the fact that specific indefinit...
متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation of the Semantics and Pragmatics of Specificity
There are many different theories of specificity in the semantic literature. These include specificity as scope (Ioup 1977, among others), specificity as referentiality (Fodor and Sag 1982), specificity as a choice function reading (Reinhart 1997, Winter 1997, Kratzer 1998, among many others), and specificity as speaker identifiability (Groenendijk & Stokhof 1980). Importantly, theories of spec...
